Nice to meet you! I’m Bridget Bryan.
In October 2019 I started this blog because I wanted to share beautiful creations and inspire other people to create as well. I made a promise to do a little of what I love each day.
I also started it beach my brother had suggested I do it a year earlier.
Ultimately, I wanted to see where it would take me. After traveling to Egypt and Jordan a few months before, (and pretty much painting and drawing wherever I went, like David Roberts), I came back knowing that art had to play a part in my daily life, and not just something that I occasionally did when I could get away from my grading and lesson prep.
As the year passed into 2020, and is now approaching 2021, God has shed his light on a path. That path has been revealed bit by bit through the fruits of consistent daily practice, and through the support and encouragement of our lovely small town community.
What path? Well, a year later, entering into my tenth year teaching, some art classes freshly under my belt, I decided that I wanted to make a living as an artist.
What you see on here is a bit of the fruit of consistent habits, and the faith in taking little steps.
The name Brushstrokes in the Darkness was inspired by a few things: the Kansas Motto Ad Astra Per Aspera (to the stars through difficulty); God’s call to “Be a light in the Darkness;” the symbol of the Holy Ghost; a friend’s nickname; and Oscar Wilde’s “All of us are in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” We all love light. Beauty is a kind of light. It gives us hope, a bit of nourishment. It’s a reason to rise, refreshed, above the darkness and worries of today and see striving for the Beauty of the Everlasting Glory to come.
Hope you enjoy what you see here. Please share this with others and let me know if it helps you in any way! I’d love to hear from you!
